Bunion Treatment Earlwood
Bunions
Bunions, medically known as hallux valgus, are a common foot condition characterised by the misalignment of the big toe joint. This misalignment causes the big toe to angle outward toward the other toes, often leading to a bony bump on the side of the foot. This outward deviation can significantly broaden the foot’s width, causing considerable discomfort when seeking well-fitting shoes.

Bunion Formation
As time progresses, bunions can adversely affect the proper functioning of the big toe, rendering activities like walking, running, jumping, and even ordinary movement profoundly painful, as each step exerts additional pressure on the misaligned joint. Genetic factors can predispose some individuals to develop bunions, often linked to flattened arches or a hypermobile foot structure that can foster bunion development. Additionally, consistent wear of narrow footwear may contribute to bunion formation.

How can we help?
- Diagnosis: This involves a physical examination, assessment of the patient’s medical history, and possibly X-rays to determine the severity and structure of the bunion.
- Pain Management: There are various treatments to alleviate pain associated with bunions. This may include recommending over-the-counter pain relievers, providing padding or cushioning for the bunion, orthotics or suggesting ice therapy for pain and inflammation.
- Footwear Advice: We offer guidance on choosing the most appropriate footwear to accommodate your foot as well as your bunion.
- Stretching Exercises: Specific stretching exercises may be recommended to improve joint flexibility and reduce tension in the toe joint. These exercises can help alleviate discomfort and prevent further bunion progression.
- Strengthening Exercises: Certain exercises can strengthen the muscles and the overall structure around the big toe joint. Improved joint stability will often reduce pain in the area and reduce the progression of bunions.
- Dry Needling: Dry needling techniques can aid in relieving muscle tension and discomfort around the bunion area.
- Orthotics: Prefabricated or custom-made orthotic devices can help address underlying biomechanical issues contributing to bunions. In more severe cases or when tailored support is required, a custom orthotic may be prescribed.
